In Burkina Faso, a significant number of youth are already sexually active, yet they often lack accurate information on HIV, STIs, and pregnancy prevention. Many schools and healthcare centers have been closed due to security events and socio-political instability, forcing adolescents to rely on the Internet for sexual and reproductive health guidance. This dependence exposes them to misinformation and disinformation on gender rights, reproductive health, and gender-based violence, posing serious risks for young girls, especially those who are internally displaced or living with disabilities. Growing poverty and limited access to reliable information also heighten the vulnerability of rural youth to radicalization. Additionally, misleading narratives on social media perpetuate harmful stereotypes, undermining human rights standards. There is an urgent need for systematic mechanisms to monitor, detect, and address misinformation to protect youth.
We partnered up with ImpactScope to adapt GWI, their greenwashing identifier ( https://gwi.impactscope.com/), to create YouthShield, a social media monitoring tool focused on identifying misinformation related to gender rights and reproductive health in Burkina Faso. This solutio systematically scans social media posts (particularly posts spread by most-followed social media influencers among young people), press releases, public documents, and legislative proposals for misleading or contradictory statements that may harm young girls and vulnerable communities.
Specifically, in the context of gender rights and reproductive health in Burkina Faso. It will highlight misinformation or conflicting content, generating actionable reports for stakeholders, including NGOs, policymakers, and educators. By flagging harmful misinformation, YouthShield supports efforts to ensure that public communications align with gender rights standards and local laws.
