The Rio Sagrado flows through one of the last and richest remnants of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil—a biome critical to global biodiversity and local Indigenous and traditional communities. But this sacred river and region has been under severe threat from a proposed international railroad project, set to destroy more than 100 water springs and fragment delicate ecosystems. Local communities are at risk of losing not only their water source, but also a cultural and spiritual landmark. If nothing is done, we risk irreversible damage to both nature and heritage.
We created the Rio Sagrado Avatar, a digital-physical AI representation of the river, co-designed with the local community. Blending art, science, and activism, the Avatar gives the river a voice—literally and symbolically—to speak for itself in political and educational spaces. It features:
This AI-vatar acts as a guardian and storyteller, helping protect the river and inspiring new legal and cultural frameworks that recognize nature’s rights.
This project is led by Sympoiesis in collaboration with:
It represents a symbiotic alliance between people, technology, and nature.
This Hypercert captures the creation and deployment of the Rio Sagrado Avatar, including the participatory design process, AI development, and installation of environmental sensors. It encompasses community meetings, the local cultural contributions, and the legislative advocacy it has inspired—including the drafting of a bill to recognize the Rio Sagrado as a living entity with legal rights.
You can talk to the Avatar right now via this web-interface or via WhatsApp. You can also monitor the live data from the sensors in the Rio Sagrado's waters via this link.
The Avatar has catalyzed powerful change: it’s revived heritage, inspired local environmental education, mobilized community action, and led to political conversations around legal personhood for the river.

It is also worth mentioning that the Rio Sagrado Avatar has opened up the doors for a wider collaboration with MAPAS – Methods of Support for Environmental and Social Practices, a Brazilian organization that has spearheaded legal recognition for Nature’s rights across Brazil. And there is now an ongoing campaign to finance the development of other "Nature's AI Avatars" for non-human entities granted with legal rights in the country.
The Rio Sagrado needs guardians—and your support helps amplify its voice. Your donation sustains ongoing community-led monitoring, legal advocacy, and AI updates. Help us protect this sacred river and pioneer a future where nature can speak for itself.
