ReFi Lagos is a ReFi DAO Local Node and grassroots initiative empowering climate ambassadors and nature stewards to scale climate solutions and improve livelihoods.
Launched in 2023, ReFi Lagos serves as a hub for changemakers leveraging technology and regenerative finance principles to address climate challenges in Africa. We are focusing on scaling climate education and creating regenerative economic solutions that empower indigenous communities and restore natural ecosystems.
To transform Africa's economic landscape by demonstrating how regenerative finance can simultaneously address climate challenges, create economic opportunities, and restore natural ecosystems
Africa's climate crisis is complex. Temperatures in the Sahel region are rising 1.5 times faster than the global average, due to increased urbanization and severe deforestation, both of which increase carbon emissions. Africa faces a funding shortage for climate mitigation and adaptation, and existing financial systems often favor extractive businesses over ecological restoration. Climate change costs Africa $15 billion per year, which exceeds the GDPs of 26 African countries. By 2050, it could reach $50 billion
Climate change impacts disadvantaged communities and threatens traditional livelihoods. With poor access to climate finance, farmers/land stewards are unable to adapt. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, more than 90% of African smallholder farmers lack access to formal credit, limiting their investment in land restoration. Climate-induced displacement in the Sahel region has resulted in rural-urban migration, climate refugees and an increase in violent extremist groups in the region.
Climate illiteracy and coordination failures pose significant difficulties in combating climate change in Africa. Over 61% of Nigerians, particularly farmers, do not understand climate change and lack the right tools to tackle it.
Climate impacts and risks will increase without climate education and coordination tools
ReFi Lagos is promoting climate education and coordination platforms for changemakers. We are promoting climate adaptation through community-based research, design and development of innovative climate solutions. Here are some of our ecosystem projects.
