Smallholder coffee farmers in Kenya, who produce some of the world’s finest Arabica coffee, face systemic challenges in accessing fair markets and financial resources. Despite contributing to a $200 billion global coffee industry, these farmers capture less than 10% of the value due to undocumented assets, climate risks, and exploitation by intermediaries. Productivity remains alarmingly low at 0.2 kg/tree compared to a potential of 1.5–2.5 kg/tree. Without financial inclusion, farmers cannot invest in critical inputs like fertilizers or modern practices, perpetuating poverty and environmental degradation. If left unaddressed, these issues will continue to erode livelihoods and the sustainability of Kenya's coffee sector.

Project Mocha revolutionizes coffee farming by leveraging blockchain technology to tokenize coffee trees and beans, enabling farmers to access on-chain liquidity for farm rehabilitation and productivity investments. By geo-tagging trees and integrating IoT sensors for productivity tracking, we ensure transparency, traceability, and fair pricing. Our approach aims to empower over 700,000 smallholder farmers while addressing climate risks through agroforestry practices that enhance biodiversity and carbon sequestration. This model not only boosts productivity by up to 300% but also creates a sustainable financial ecosystem that benefits both farmers and global investors.
