Just-DNA-Seq is an open-source personal genomics platform designed to put individuals in control of their genetic information. Building on earlier Gitcoin-supported efforts, we're seeking additional support to expand the platform—making it even more useful for exploring longevity genetics and advancing decentralized science.
Our goal is to create accessible, transparent tools that help anyone explore what their genome says about their health and longevity.
Here’s what we’ve already built:
Genetic data can be powerful, but it’s often locked behind barriers. We’re solving that with transparency, accessibility, and tools that make sense to non-experts.
1. Transparency and Trust
Most commercial services operate as black boxes—users don’t know how results are generated or what data is used. Just-DNA-Seq is fully open-source (Website), so you can review the code (GitHub), run the analysis locally, and understand exactly how each insight is generated. We rely on open databases and give users control to filter and explore their data. And while open tools are the backbone of trust, we’re also working on making them easier to use—better UIs, tutorials, and documentation are part of our ongoing roadmap.
2. Making Complex Data Understandable
Genetic data is huge—and messy. While machine learning can spot patterns, it often doesn’t explain why they matter. We're actively integrating interpretable AI/ML models that highlight the why, linking predictions to genes, pathways, and biological mechanisms. Our aim is to move beyond black-box AI and make genetic insights clear and meaningful for users.
3. Lowering the Knowledge Barrier
Even with good tools, genetics can be overwhelming. That’s why we built Genetics Genie, an AI assistant trained on curated genetic databases and modules. It's available via a web chat or as a custom GPT on OpenAI.
Genetics Genie uses a multi-agent system and supports models like Llama 3.3 and Gemini to provide solid, context-aware answers. We're continuously updating its knowledge base and improving how it explains things in plain language—so users get help, not confusion.
Supporting Just-DNA-Seq on Gitcoin means backing a future where anyone—not just labs or corporations—can understand and explore their own DNA. It’s a step toward a world where personal genomics is open, empowering, and community-driven.
Join us in building tools that put science into the hands of people.
Let’s democratize personal genomics—together.
We empower individuals by democratizing personal genomics. Our accessible, transparent, open-source tools put control over genetic information and longevity insights directly into people's hands and advance community-driven science.
Personal genetic data holds immense potential, but individuals face major barriers. Most commercial services operate as opaque "black boxes," making it impossible to verify how results are generated or what data is used, eroding trust. Users often lack true ownership and control over their sensitive genetic information, unsure of how it might be used or shared by third parties.
Furthermore, genetic data itself is incredibly complex and vast. Without a background in genetics or bioinformatics, interpreting raw data or even standard reports is overwhelming for most people. This "knowledge barrier" prevents individuals from gaining meaningful, actionable insights from their own genome, particularly for complex areas like health risks and the genetic influences on longevity, limiting both personal understanding and broader citizen science contributions.
Just-DNA-Seq tackles these issues head-on with a fully open-source personal genomics platform centered on transparency, accessibility, and user control. We provide a suite of tools built on the OakVar framework, including modules for Longevity Variants, Polygenic Risk Scores, and Health Risks, alongside bioinformatic pipelines—all available in public GitHub repositories. This allows anyone to scrutinize the code, understand the methods, run analyses locally, and verify insights using open data, building a foundation of trust.
To make genetics understandable, we focus on clear outputs and user support. Our platform generates personalized Genetics of Aging and Disease Reports designed for clarity, highlighting key risks and traits. We're integrating interpretable AI/ML models that explain why a prediction is made, moving beyond black-box approaches. We also built "Genetics Genie," an AI assistant trained on curated genetic knowledge, to answer questions in plain language and help users navigate the complexities of their genetic information.
