to help curb the obesity crisis - making healthy living rewarding, social, and fun.
Obesity and overweight are rapidly escalating public health challenges in the Global South, encompassing low- and middle-income countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Once considered issues of high-income nations, these conditions now represent a growing epidemic with significant health and economic consequences.
Key Statistics and Metrics
Prevalence Growth: Since 1980, the number of overweight and obese adults in developing countries has nearly quadrupled, reaching around one billion by 2014-up from 250 million in 1980. By 2022,1 in 8 people worldwide were living with obesity, and global adult obesity rates have more than doubled since 1990.
Current and Projected Burden: In 2021, nearly half of the global adult population was overweight or obese. Projections indicate that by 2050, more than half of all adults worldwide-and a third of children, teenagers, and young adults-will be overweight or obese, with the most rapid increases expected in lower-income countries.
Regional Trends:
In sub-Saharan Africa, the number of overweight or obese adults is expected to increase by over 250% by 2050, reaching 522 million people. Nigeria alone is projected to see its overweight or obese population more than triple from 36 million in 2021 to 141 million by 2050.
In South and Southeast Asia, countries like Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, and Timor-Leste are experiencing some of the fastest annual growth rates in adult obesity, with compound annual growth rates (CAGR) ranging from 6% to nearly 10%.
Young Adults: Among young adults in developing countries, obesity prevalence ranges from 2.3% to 12%, with overweight rates as high as 28.8%. Urbanization is a major driver, with urban youth showing a tenfold higher prevalence of overweight/obesity compared to their rural counterparts.
Health Impacts: Obesity is a leading risk factor for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and stroke. In 2021, 1.6 million premature deaths from NCDs were directly attributable to high BMI, a figure surpassing deaths from road traffic incidents.
Underlying Drivers
Dietary Shifts: Economic growth and urbanization have led to dietary transitions, with increased consumption of fats, sugars, and animal products, and reduced intake of cereals and grains.
Lifestyle Changes: Sedentary lifestyles, reduced physical activity, and greater access to processed foods are fueling the epidemic, especially among urban populations.
Policy Readiness
The majority of countries in the Global South are unprepared to address rising obesity levels. Two-thirds have none or just one of five key obesity policies in place, and only 7% have adequately prepared health systems.
Imperfect Form directly addresses the obesity epidemic in the Global South by leveraging the proven power of gamification, social incentives, and financial rewards to drive sustained, healthy behavior change.
How Imperfect Form Tackles the Problem
Gamification of Fitness
Imperfect Form transforms exercise from a chore into an engaging experience by integrating game mechanics-points, achievements, quests, competitions, and challenges-into every aspect of the platform. This approach is shown to increase motivation, adherence, and enjoyment, helping users build long-term healthy habits. Features like leaderboards, streaks, and badges tap into users’ natural desire for achievement and progress, making them more likely to stick with their routines.
SocialFi and Community Engagement
The platform fosters a sense of community through collective goals, team-based challenges, and social accountability. Users can set goals together (e.g., "row across the Atlantic"), stake their reputation or funds on achieving personal or group milestones, and even bet on others’ success. Social features-such as nudges, real-time progress sharing, and friendly competition-are proven to boost motivation and help users overcome barriers to sustained activity.
Incentivization and Rewards
By integrating SocialFi mechanics, Imperfect Form enables users to earn tangible rewards for their fitness achievements. This can include digital currencies, cashback, or other incentives, mirroring successful models like Sweatcoin and Vitality, which have demonstrated that financial rewards can meaningfully increase physical activity and engagement. Users can redeem rewards for fitness gear, healthy food, or donate to charitable causes, further reinforcing positive behavior.
Goal Setting and Tracking
The app empowers users to set personal and collective goals, track progress with data analytics, and receive instant feedback. Research shows that clear, self-determined goals, combined with real-time tracking and feedback, are critical for achieving and maintaining weight loss and fitness improvements.
