The first dashboard displaying on-chain activities of the main global digital assets in environmental markets, focusing on tokenized carbon credits.
Background:
ECOTA and PositiveBlockchain jointly created the Web3 Carbon Database in 2023. It is an open-data directory of 190+ startups and projects using blockchain and web3 tools in the value chain of carbon credits or other environmental assets (biodiversity, ReFi..). The database has been established through desk research and direct surveys with web3 projects, curated by experts and entrepreneurs active in the Web3 carbon and Regenerative Finance (ReFi) space.
This industry is still in a nascent stage, somewhat fragmented but receives a lot of attention and potential for growth. The World Bank has launched a meta registry on blockchain called CAD Trust to provide transparency and avoid double counting with carbon credits issues on traditional, paper-based registries. The InterWork Alliance is trying to implement new frameworks and standards for Carbon Emission Tokens. Digital working groups within IETA, Verra, GoldStandard, and many other participants are also trying to align practices in utilizing blockchain and web3 approaches in the carbon and environmental market space.
Yet, on-chain information such as project registrations, standards used, trading volume, credit issuance, transactions and retirements are not aggregated and monitored to create visibility for the ecosystem. This is where ECOTA and PositiveBlockchain come in.
Project & Benefits
In 2024, the two associations have the ambition to develop a dashboard tracking and displaying data on the on-chain activities of the main carbon tokens already launched.
With this project, we aim to democratize access to pivotal information and propel innovation in climate finance and sustainability strategies. It will provide information on trends and innovation development for both traditional web2 and innovative web3 market participants.
Project components:
1/ Maintain Web3 Carbon Database
We will update the directory itself and keep mapping the growing ecosystem, identifying:
New startups and projects in the space
Roles and goals of these, along the value chain of carbon tokenization
Blockchain platform used
GHG project methodologies (VCS, CDM, ISO, new methodologies..)
Token standards
Tokenized off-chain credits versus native carbon tokens
Github repositories
Social media channels
Regional activities (project and token registration, countries of local project activity)
Core data points of these projects will remain in open access and CSV download, presented in a directory page and searchable/filtrable Airtable format.
2/ Best-in-class Web3 Carbon tokens
We will identify the most developed project among the Database, especially those focusing on the issuance and transactions of tokenized carbon credits. Criteria will include
Token launched: Yes/no
Object of tokenization: focusing on the tokenized carbon credit themselves (not tokens representing DAO governance, equity, or other types of assets)
Volume of activity (defining an inclusion threshold)
Examples of projects already identified and well-known in the space include: Toucan, MOSS, Flowcarbon, Nori, Coorest, Regen, C3, Dovu, Open Forest Protocol, Single Earth, Gain Forest, etc.
3/ On-chain Web3 Carbon Token Dashboard
We will develop a dashboard presenting on-chain activity of the shortlisted Web3 Carbon Tokens (see 2/)
