DeFood is short for the Decentralized Food Security Network (DFSN), which explores ways to increase local, regional and global food security by reversing the industrial model and decentralizing food production, at a time when extreme climate impacts, war and other factors threaten farming and other food production, as well as food distribution. Our primary focus is building the DeFood app, which supports local agriculture by providing a free, UX-friendly buy/sell/barter platform thatâs easy for even the least sophisticated farmer to use, and allows them to get the best price with the least delivery cost.

Weâll start with our 2 guinea pigs, a local farmer and a local restaurant owners, to work out the bugs, the gradually scale up to the other small farmers on our island (we have over 100) and other food buyers. During this phase, weâll add automatic invoicing and a clean payment gateway, and work out the kinks of standardizing deliveries and using transportation efficiently to minimize carbon emissions.

Blockchain-enabled dMRV integration will then allow farmers to verify carbon sequestration and create a database of information on soil, microclimates and other information that can be crunched to make farming more resilient as the climate changes. Interoperability will allow us to expand to other local communities and other platforms at the same time. Ultimately weâll scale globally, creating a network of micro-local buyers and sellers and invaluable data on how best to grow food in a changing world.
