Each savings group is backed by its own Solidity escrow contract holding cUSD on-chain. An ERC-8004-registered autonomous agent - deployed as agent #9146 on Celo mainnet and #274 on Sepolia - operates the workflow autonomously by triggering contribution collection and rotating payouts as cycles progress. But critically, the agent itself has zero custodial authority. It cannot arbitrarily move funds, rewrite balances, or drain the treasury. Every economic invariant lives entirely inside the escrow contract: one contribution per member per cycle, fixed payout sequencing, fixed amounts, valid timing windows, and deterministic payout rules. Even if the agent key were fully compromised, no attacker could steal user funds. At worst, they could temporarily disrupt the workflow schedule - and even that failure mode is mitigated because the contracts are self-recovering: anyone can step in and trigger the required workflow transactions if the courtesy agent goes offline.
The result is a practical demonstration of what “agentic finance without financial trust” actually looks like. The chama is not a gimmick wrapped around AI infrastructure; it is intentionally the smallest realistic financial coordination primitive capable of proving the ERC-8004 thesis in production. The autonomous agent handles operational coordination, while the contracts enforce hard guarantees. The system removes the need to trust the operator without removing the human social structure that makes rotating savings groups work in the first place.
