Project Details
What are you going to build?:
We will port the Aragon Client and our Commons Stack (CS) tooling to Optimism. This will enable projects to use the Aragon Client dapp to create and manage new DAOs on Optimism. They will also be able to use Commons Stack’s governance and market maker tooling such as Tao Voting and the Augmented Bonding Curve (ABC). We see that having accessible and trusted DAO formation and management tooling is an important piece for Optimism’s wider adoption.
This project includes two parts:
Making simple DAOs via AragonOS available to all projects on Optimism
Creating Tao Voting & Augmented Bonding Curve deployment tools
Detailed explanation for each:
AragonOS is an open-source, battle tested DAO tech stack first launched on mainnet in 2018. Over $6B is secured across the top 5,000 DAOs formed on Aragon.
The Aragon Client is the dapp that provides a web-based UI for interacting with Aragon deployed DAOs. While it provides a familiar interface for OGs that want to deploy a trusted DAO system, it’s also accessible for new users that want to create and vote on proposals, manage funds, change smart contract permissions, and set up novel governance structures.
The Aragon protocol is designed to be highly modular and customizable, allowing DAO creators to choose the features and functionalities they need out of the box with their templates for creating reputation DAOs, 1-person-1-vote DAOs, traditional shareholder-style DAOs or any combination of the two. Because Aragon has been around for so long incredible tools like EVMcrisper and even niche wallets like Frame have been built to enable powerful functionality for DAOs using this framework.
The Aragon Client uses The Graph, an indexing protocol. The Graph is in the process of decentralizing their service and as part of that process all subgraphs may need to be updated. We will commit to making these updates to the relevant subgraphs when The Graph decides to update in order to keep the Aragon Client functioning. As well, this proposal includes three (3) months of technical maintenance for the Aragon Client.
Note: We will be working with our partner, Blossom Labs, to realize this work and create a Optimism specific web portal, and we will collaborate with Aragon to enable Optimism as a chain on their hosted web portal.
On top of the AragonOS client, Commons Stack, in partnership with 1Hive, Blockscience, Blossom Labs, and several other orgs has helped to construct two other important applications: Tao Voting and the Augmented Bonding Curve.
Tao Voting
AragonOS was recently updated by the Aragon team and Blossom Labs to host new front end application for Tao Voting, which is the continuation of work that was halted in 2020 by the original AragonOne team. Tao Voting was picked up by 1Hive and used by BrightID, Giveth, Token Engineering Commons (TEC) and many others for their DAOs. It offers important features like Delegation and Wait for Quiet. Delegation is obvious, but Wait for Quiet might be new to many. It is the automated extension of voting periods in the case of a change of outcome near the end of the voting period. This prevents whales from coming in at the last minute and swinging a controversial vote in their favor, without giving the opposing community time to rally support.
