Launching Nonprofit Research for Donor Advisors

Karma nonprofit research for donor advisors

“I love reading 990 PDFs and opening 20 tabs to vet one nonprofit.” Said no donor advisor, ever. So we built Nonprofit Research, an AI agent made specifically for donor advisors, and it launches today. If you help clients decide where their giving goes, this is for you.

Here’s how it usually goes. A client says “Find me organizations focused on extracurricular activities for girls, specifically sports and science programs in the Bay Area.” It’s a very clear ask, isn’t it? Except now you’re 20 tabs deep: GuideStar, 990 PDFs, nonprofit websites that haven’t been touched since 2022. How many hours went into this that could’ve been spent building relationships? And when you finally pick, a co-trustee asks “why this one?” and you’ll spend more time creating a report or deck for them.

To solve this problem, we built a research agent that does the grunt work and shows its receipts. For every recommendation, it:

  • Verifies 501(c)(3) status against IRS Publication 78
  • Pulls the latest Form 990 filings
  • Checks state charity registries
  • Scours the internet for the latest news on the org, down to local media coverage
  • Reads their social channels to see how active they really are
  • Matches on your client’s cause, geography, and grant size

Then it weights each metric, stack ranks the whole field, and proposes three instead of overwhelming clients with a 40-row spreadsheet. And if you’d weight things differently, you can turn the dials yourself: change the weights and the ranking recalculates.

We’re launching with fast mode that does the work in about 10 minutes. We’re soon launching deep mode that adds outreach calls and emails within 3 days, for when real money is about to move.

We have a lot of cool features like highlighting and commenting anywhere in the report and going back and forth with your donor clients right inside the report, like Google Docs. Our process is, build, show it to advisors, get feedback, go back and build what they want. The goal is to give them back their time so they spend more time building relationships and offload the rest to these smart agents.

So here’s our launch-week offer for donor advisors: free research briefs for the first 20 who ask. Send us your hardest client request. If the agent chokes on it, we’ll tell you that too.
